Kansas City Comets
The Kansas City Comets are an indoor soccer team currently based in Independence Missouri. The team, originally known as the Missouri Comets, joined the Major Indoor Soccer League as an expansion team in time for the 2010-2011 season. Currently, the team plays their home games out of Cable Dahmer Arena are are members of the Major Arena Soccer League.
The Comets weren’t actually the first team to carry the name. The original Comets played in the original Major Indoor Soccer League from 1981-1991. Kim Rentved was one of the stars of this original squad and he went on to become the head coach for the modern Comets on AUgust 16, 2010. Assistant Coach Vlatko Andonovski was promoted to Head Coach on August 29, 2013, succeeding Røntved.
During the first few seasons, the Comets established themselves with a strong 8-12 finish in the 2010-11 season, falling to the Milwaukee Wave in three games in the playoffs. Then in the 2011-12 season, the Comets finished second in the Central Division with a 15-9 record, but lost to the Wave in the first round of the playoffs. Then the team had a 13-13 record in the 2012-13 season placing third. But this time they made it all the way to the championship series only to lose to the Baltimore Blast.
Then, after the 2013-14 season, the team announced they were leaving the MISL to join the MASL along with five other teams. During their debut season in the MASL (2014-15) the Comets exploded into the records with an incredible undefeated 20-0 season. They also ended the season with a league best 239 goals and a stunning 149 goal differential. So hopes were high for the team in postseason play.
However, the team’s streak ended when they faced the Baltimore Blast in the second round of the playoffs. But the team continued it’s push for excellence with a win in the following season’s Central Division with a strong 17-3 record, before falling to Baltimore again in the postseason.
The team’s success continued until the 2017-18 season when the team ended with a 7-12 season and missed the playoffs for the first time in their history. Afterwhich, they returned to form with a new roster that saw them reach the playoffs.
