Team Summary
The Kansas City Mavericks are an ice hockey team for the ECHL founded in 2009. Originally the team was known as the Missouri Mavericks of the CHL.
The original team was formed after the CHL announced an expansion team for Independence to begin play in 2009. The new team worked with The Examiner to hold a name the team contest that lasted until May 11. The contest resulted in The Mavericks being chosen and their colors to be revealed on June 24. The newly formed team then played their opening game on November 13, 2009 before a crowd of 5,760 fans at the Independence Events Center.
Two years later, in September of 2011, the Mavericks announced an affiliation agreement with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL for the 2011-12 season. This agreement was then renewed in one year contracts until 2015. During this time, Mavericks extended head coach Scott Hillman’s contract through the 2013-14 season. And the team also announced that their games for the 2012-13 season would be broadcast on 1660 KUDL.
Since then, the team has had their strong seasons and weaker seasons, including Dicksons fourth season as head coach when the team ended up in last place in their division. But hopes are high for the team’s success with the announcement of an affiliation with the Seattle Kraken and Seattle’s AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
